Cortaderia - WHITE FEATHER - PAMPAS GRASS SEEDS
Ornamental grasses are fantastic for softening hard landscaping and using as a contrast to plants with bold outlines.
A
favourite specimen plant with long, silky, silver plumes - it looks
wonderful in any garden. These plumes are also excellent in dried
flower arrangments.
Flower stems also suitable for drying.
- Sow in
Spring in trays or pots of seed compost on the surface , do not cover the seed
as light is needed for germination.
- Compost
must be kept moist .Leave tray or pot uncovered in a bright sunny position.
- Maintain
a temperature between 15 – 21 °c (60-70°f)
- When
seedlings are large enough to handle pot on individually and harden off outside
as soon as possible
Plant out
to final position in late summer. Remarkably tough and adaptable but it will
prefer an open, sunny spot with good air circulation and fairly fertile,
well-drained soil (it does not like it too wet). Add grit and lightweight
compost to heavy soil, and lots of well-rotted organic matter to thin dry soil.
A major advantage is that it is incredibly drought-tolerant and shouldn't need
watering except at planting.
Flowers –
Autumn / winter A hardy perennial that flowers 2-3 years after sowing
Cut back
the flowering stems and old foliage in spring. Use loppers and secateurs be
careful as the leaves have sharp edges and that give a nasty cut.
Propagate using a sharp spade, divide a section
of the plant from the parent in spring or autumn, then pot on or plant directly
into prepared garden soil.
