Most of perennial Lobelias are not 100% frost hardy and will need
protection during the winter months by covering the soil with leaf mould or
peat.
Perennial Lobelia plants like a deep, rich damp soil, perhaps this could
be provided by a pool that occasionally overflows.Perennial lobelias enjoy the same moist soil conditions as primroses, so
these - especially the red or pinkish coloured varieties - make happy companion
plants.
They are easily propagated to build up impressive colonies by dividing
the clumps in early spring, as the new growth is awakening, either using a
knife or a pair of digging forks.
Slugs find the young growths of these plants delicious, and should be
deterred.
