Delphiniums
are the stars of the early summer border. Plants form low mounds of
deeply-cut green leaves, bearing tall spikes of satiny flowers – Hardy
perennial Excellent for the smaller garden, also nice in mixed
containers.
Sowing instructions
Sow indoors - Late winter to mid spring
quarter inch 0.5cm deep in trays of seed compost - Cover seed with vermiculite.
Keep moist and warm - 15-20°c / 60 – 68°f is ideal
Thin out when seedlings have developed
2-4 leaves, spacing at least 1inch apart . Harden off and plant outdoors in
late spring - spacing 18inches (45cm) apart
Or Sow outdoors Late spring to mid summer in a seed bed
Keep moist .Thin seedlings to 2 inches (5cm) apart as soon as they develop.
Transplant to flowering position in Autumn to flower the
following year. Use a high phosphorous fertilizer each year, in
early spring
Plant delphiniums in full sun. This compact
strain produces flowers in a range of shades, from blue, through to purple,
lavender, soft pink and white. Removing faded spikes at the base will encourage
repeat blooming. FLOWERS from early summer
ideal where wind can damage taller types and they don’t need
staking .
